"Change Outlook towards Security"
By Prabhu Ram
Mumbai, Mar 10, 2009 1653 hrs IST

Each enterprise has a unique setup and hence it needs to identify requirements and customize security. The customization should be based on an enterprises' immediate imperative and available budget, recommended Santosh Koratt, CTO of SecureSynergy.

"SMEs needlessly spend in unwarranted investments. Security, when customized prudently and intelligently, offers more value returns to small and medium enterprises," he said. Before any solution is deployed, enterprises need to introspect to evaluate two important things -- current exposure to risk, and scope of vulnerability.

Actually SMEs need to change their outlook toward security. "Processes at workplace play an important role. Hence it is crucial to invest in people training, and also in backend security applications." It is important to bind these applications with business continuity, which is also a subset of security.

Organizations often fail to categorize priority and severity thereby leading to higher capital expenditure, said Koratt.

The challenge is to prioritize business operations and customize security standards for prudent investments.
